Slut shaming amounts to a variety of sexual harassment, it seeks to use social forces to stifle a life impulse for real or imaginary reasons. What a terrible thing to do to any living being. Nobody wants their own life force used against them as a weapon. Girls endure this harassment much worse than boys due to double standards. Cultural differences exist. In America, we don’t have moral police or religious sects attacking us with canes when kissing our sweetheart. The threshold for slut shaming in some places is shockingly low e.g. showing too much shoulder.
The vine of life, just beginning to bud, is hit with a cold frost, as it naturally and innocently reaches toward blossoming.
These girls in the video needlessly faced the sexual harassment of slut shaming and ostracism for liking certain clothes or having boy friends…
Some girls in the video appear mere children. I can try imagine what this slut shaming feels like and it seems horrible. I want girls and women to have a good life without others imposing their ideas on their freedom. In the way we speak of the brotherhood of humanity. What about our sisters? We should want both their freedom and hope for their joy, regardless of our less than informed opinions about their choices. Anyone who does not want girls to have freedom, to wear whatever they want, to like whoever they like (including boys), to speak boldly etc., whatever excuse these ‘perhaps’ well-meaning people offer, they indulge in power over girls when they use shame. This shame is an abuse.
We can train a cat to fear a mouse by shocking it with loud noise when we expose it to a mouse.
A cat becomes conditioned to expect the shock and fear, it learns to run away from a mouse when it sees one. It goes against its instinct. Sexual harassment is a shock.
Arguably this poor cat symbolizes what we do to girls. John B. Watson accomplished a similar result with a human infant in the days before ethics had a foothold in behavioral science.
After conditioning, Albert feared not just the white rat, but a wide variety of similar white objects as well. His fear included other furry objects including Raynor’s fur coat and Watson wearing a Santa Claus beard.
Every sensible child learns that coercion, deceit, recklessness and violence exist. But we need not shame children to get them to understand why to avoid these things. Shame is a powerful social tool and let’s use it to discourage coercion, deceit, recklessness and violence, not to shame the children, girls and women facing these things as an abuse of power.
